Prevent the hangover: what to eat before your drink

We all have a big night out now and then, and more often than not the next morning is a painful experience. Preparing your body before drinking can have a huge impact on how well you feel the day after. If you want to make sure you are bright-eyed and busy-tailed, here are some of our top tips to help you prevent a hangover.

You may think you've heard this one before, but eating a meal before you drink is not only useful to 'line your stomach', it also helps your body to metabolise alcohol better, which makes for a faster recovery. Rather than filling up on carbohydrates, its more useful to create a balanced plate combining proteins and healthy fats.

Red meat is high in amino acids, which help to keep your liver healthy. This tasty beef stir fry also packs in plenty of carbohydrates and healthy fats in the form of light sesame oil.


  • 4 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 tsp chilli flakes
  • 3 tsp sesame oil
  • sirloin steak, sliced
  • 1 large onion
  • cooked basmati rice
  • seasonal vegetables


1. Combine the soy sauce, garlic, chilli flakes and sesame oil in a processor to give you a thick and fragrant marinade.

2. Heat a wok with a little more sesame oil. Stir fry the onion for a few minutes then add the beef and marinade.

3. Stir constantly until cooked through and serve with rice and vegetables.

If you prefer to steer clear of meat, you can prepare your body with a high carb, high protein vegetarian meal. Broccoli is rich in B vitamins that support the pancreas, which has to do a bit of extra work to counteract our high sugar intake from alcoholic drinks.


  • whole wheat pasta
  • 2 tbsps olive oil
  • broccoli, cut into small florets
  • cauliflower, cut into small florets
  • 1/2 can white beans
  • salt and pepper


1. Cook the pasta in a pan of salted water. Drain and save ¼ cup of cooking water.

2. Heat the olive oil in a pan and roast the veg for a few minutes before adding the garlic and white beans.

3. Add the cooked pasta and cooking water, then toss and heat through.

The antioxidants in green tea are great for your liver. Unlike black tea, it’s unfermented, which helps to preserve its antioxidant polyphenolic catechols, which help to block toxins from alcohol. Try sipping a cup before a night out to prepare your body.

We've all been told to drink water before we go to bed after a night on the tiles.
