Staying Energised: It's all about the BS



Stable energy levels throughout the day is something we all aspire to; mornings without bleary eyes, afternoons without the slump and an evening out without a disco nap. But how can we work towards making this a reality?
Our bodies have a number of ways of telling us we’re low on energy; from difficulty concentrating and brain fog to craving sugary foods and drinks our body really does do the talking. So how can you help improve your energy levels?
Blood sugar balance is hugely important for sustained energy levels. If you improve your blood sugar balance you can avoid those cyclical energy highs and lows we all feel from sugary snacks and drink. The afternoon-slump will be a thing of the past.
To achieve more balanced blood sugar levels, both the timing and composition of your meals are hugely important:

Meal Timing
Unless you are undertaking a form of intermittent fasting for health or religious reasons we recommend that you try to eat a balanced meal (as above) every 3.5 - 4.5 hours to ensure your blood sugar levels remain stable throughout the day.

Specific Foods
It is most important that you primarily follow a well-rounded diet as detailed above, once you have successfully made a habit of incorporating vegetables and a protein source into every meal you can begin to look at how to further optimise your diet for energy levels. We recommend a 1:1 consultation with a registered nutritionist or dietician for this as nutrition is so personal and individualised to your lifestyle!


Specific foods we can focus on are those you should minimise within your diet if you are working towards more balancing your energy levels: Most notably high sugar foods as these will give you a short burst of energy, followed by a sump when your blood sugar plummets. We’re talking about sweets, fizzy drinks, pasta and white bread. When you’re feeling peckish try to focus on less processed, less packaged, high protein snacks to give you a sustained and filling energy boost when you need it most.
